Architecture: Project vs. Practice

Accomplished architect Peter Eisenman has a wonderful conversation about the various forms of architectural pursuits. It speaks about his notion of architecture being divided into two categories: Project and Practice.

My interpretation of these two forms or our craft is one (Project) having an ongoing evolution that can be deemed very personal to the architect and the other (Practice) being more business-like and service oriented.

I have always been interested in architecture beyond it being a job or career. Architecture is a part of life and an evolution of the human condition. The method of a project resides within the envelope of the process and understanding what the process actually is and how to convey that through the work.

A great way to view this process and all of its various layers is to read, and more importantly, understand the concepts that an architect like Peter Eisenman executes. These lessons are best delineated in his book “Diagram Diaries.”
